In 2021, the WA Legislature changed the way communites are required to plan for housing due to the massive need for new development and affordable housing options. House Bill 1220 (2021) amended the Growth Management Act (GMA) to instruct local governments to "plan for and accomodate", rather than "encourage the affordability of" housing affordable to all income levels. The amendment also directed the WA Department of Commerce to provide guidance on housing needs and allocations to all jurisdictions. Laura Hodgson from the Dept. of Commerce will explain what Commerce's role in HB 1220 is and how their guidance is helping Pierce County jurisdictions plan for affordable housing in the upcoming 2024 Comprehensive Plan Update.

This is the 2nd Lunch and Learn session in a series dedicated to the upcoming 2024 Comprehensive Plan Updates. Please join us each month by signing up for our newsletter to receive future invites.
